Hello everyone. I wanted to let everyone know that as of March 1, 2015 I will shut down this blog and will be posting updates and information on my Land of the Free Facebook Group as well as on the new forum created by Kurtus Brown. I feel that consolidating our efforts on a few locations will make it easier for the community to stay informed and interact with one another.

You can find the Facebook Group here

The Land of the Free forum is located on Yuku and can be found here

Please continue to enjoy your Land of the Free Wargaming and I hope to see you on the Facebook page and the Forum.

Thanks,

Joe Krone

P.S. The Quick Reference Sheets have been posted on the Facebook Page under "Files" and I will post them on the Forum as well.

P.S.S. I will also post on both pages the updated Order of Battle for the Second Battle of Trenton since the British are missing the element sizes.
Another great year has passed into history and with the distribution of Land of the Free in full swing I am looking forward to 2015 and hopefully seeing lots of games being played, talked about and run at local conventions.

I have been a little quiet lately because I have been finishing a book for Winged Hussar Publishing that covers battles in Europe from the 5th century up until the 15th century. The idea of the book is very similar to the historical re-fights in Land of the Free so I provide a background and synopsis of each battle, a recommended force list for the combatants, and a deployment of the armies for wargamers to utilize. Once that book is done it will be back to the hobby table and a jump into the 18th century so I can continue building my new AWI armies and offer new content for everyone.

My first objective in this new year is to provide some of the corrections that are needed for the Land of the Free book including the missing British element sizes for the Battle of Princeton.

More to follow very soon so stay tuned.................
Hello everyone. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday and if you did not celebrate Thanksgiving......wellllllllll......you should. :)

Here are scanned images of the quick reference sheets. I couldn't figure out a way to post the PDF's without joining other websites to host the PDF's but I did post the PDF's on the Land of the Free Facebook Group Page. You can easily download these pictures by right clicking on the image and saving to your computer. When it prints it should be a full page.

I hope you have enjoyed the rules and game so far and more hobby content and information to follow after the holidays. For now I hope you find these sheets useful. Thanks
Hello everyone. As people begin to read the rules and have some questions regarding the implementation of various aspects I would like to have a central point we could post the FAQ. You have two options that are available to you to make this happen.

1. Post a comment below asking your question and I will answer in the comments.
2. You can send me an email and I will address the question and post the question and answer at a later date.

Eventually I will collect the FAQ and put into a nice PDF that people can download and refer to during game play.

Thanks and enjoy.

Hello everyone. The internet is huge and if you spend enough time surfing you can pretty much find anything you are looking for. When it comes to Land of the Free I would rather see my fellow hobbyists spend their time painting, playing, and reading those websites that are placed at their fingertips.

With that being said I would like to present to you the first review by a gentleman who has read through the rules and it working on scheduling his first game.
The Miniatures Page also has a few subjects that are following the reviews and comments on Land of the Free. Here is the link for them:

TMP American Revolution Boards

Wargames Illustrated also wrote an article covering the new rules in the October 2014 issue of the magazine and has additional photographs of the game here:
I have been in contact with other reviewers and more information will be pouring in over the next few months. I will continue to post the links as I receive them so stay tuned.

I will also post the links on the Land of the Free Facebook Group so if you are looking for more instant gratification then sign up.
Hello everyone. When I pulled up to my mailbox after work today I was surprised to see an envelope from Osprey Publishing. The plain white padded envelope had the same size and shape that all the other Osprey rulebooks have so I was excited to rip the seal open and peer inside. A warm smile ran across my face and for the first time I gazed upon the physical copy of the rulebook. I have always thought about converting to digital copies of rulebooks but I will be honest it feels a lot different when you can hold it and flip through the pages. I thought I would take a few pictures of some of the pages over the next month or so to give everyone a feel of what the book looks like. Please enjoy and the arrival of the book definitely brightened my Monday and I hope it does the same for you.
Throughout the book Osprey has utilized their vast collection of artwork to populate its pages. The book contains 8 'generic' scenarios that players can use for friendly or competitive games. Each scenario allows players to decide if they want to fight along the length or width of the table. A unique scenario design giving the players something else to consider before deploying for battle.
More to come......

Having worked for two gaming companies that offered a full range of products from miniatures, books, tokens, and paints I wanted to try and emulate that business model without the finances or backing of a company. I reached out to several manufacturers in the gaming industry with the hopes of bringing together their knowledge and resources to offer a full range of products. Ironheart Artisans as previously discussed in an earlier article has produced and released a range of markers to compliment the Land of the Free rules system. Check them out by clicking on the links for each item below. The links will take you right to the webstore.
Hello everyone. It has been some time since my last post and I have been ramping up my miniature painting in preparation for the release of Land of the Free. Initially the book was going to hit the shelves in the latter half of October but it has been pushed back to early November. Not a huge delay but still in time for the holidays and hopefully those fall gaming conventions around the globe.

I created a Facebook Group in order for anyone interested in having up-to-date, instantaneous conversations for anything related to the book, hobby, history, etc. I will continue to use the blog to post battle reports, painting and hobby articles, scenarios, etc. and draw a link to the articles on the Facebook page. This way the articles will be easier to find rather than scrolling through all the posts in the group.

I am hoping to go to Fall In this November in Lancaster, PA but its a long drive from Atlanta. It will be nice and a lot of fun to run some games at the show so perhaps I will find a way.

Here is a shot of the cover of the book:

Here is my first command stand completed painted for my 2nd Maryland Regiment. The highlights are a lot more drastic than I usually paint but I honestly believe they will look great on the table from the typical 3-4 feet distance that most players will view them from. I am currently considering my options on how I want to do my flags. I usually order my flags from the Flag Dude but I am reluctant to cut away the plastic banner and drill holes for the metal banner pole that comes with the flag. The nice thing about the metal banner pole is I will never have to worry about it breaking so I will continue to mull over the idea. In the meantime, I will continue my progress on the 2nd Maryland as well as some British light infantry, 43rd of Foot, 9th Virginia Regiment, and about 60+ militia.

I am in the process of looking for a new home so updates and progress may slow down over the next month but I will continue to post when I have something to show.

I am teaching myself how to make painting tutorial videos as well as rules tutorials which I hope to start posting after my move sometime in August.

If anyone is interested in knowing what colors I am using I will be happy to share and will probably post some simple painting guides over the next few weeks. They will serve as a guide for any new hobbyists as well as a reminder for me so I don't forget how I painted units. :)

Progress continues on my starter armies for my American Revolution forces. I have been doing research and trying to find some unusual uniforms for my Continental force. Every force needs a handful of militia so one of the first elements I painted was a 3 stand element of militia.

For games that I plan on running using the Land of the Free rules, a 3-stand element will represent a medium element.

Here is the front and back view of my prototype for my 2nd Maryland Regiment. I saw a few drawings of the 2nd MD in brownish colored 'small clothes' so I opted for an ochre color. It may not be 100% accurate but I think it looks good.
I am hoping to do some real painting damage this weekend and get a few stands of infantry completed. I plan on gluing 4 miniatures per base hence the reason why the bases on the single miniatures above aren't done.
I have been cleaning and assembling a handful of the new Wargames Factory American Revolution plastics over the past few weeks but all of my writing assignments have kept me pretty busy. I finally got around to priming some and this past week I realized how much I enjoy painting. I managed to get about 16 militia fully painted and based and I will cover them in a later article. For now I wanted to show you my progress on some Continentals and British.

This light infantry soldier of the 43rd Foot is completely painted which gives me a nice test model to work off of. There is quite a contrast in each level of highlighting but I think they will look great on the tabletop. I thought I would honor one of the first regiments to experiment with light infantry tactics and they were present at quite a few battles during the war.
Here is an officer and a drummer from the 43rd Foot. I wanted to show them in their 'raw' state. They are simply base coated and 'dipped' using the Army Painter wash. I hit them with Testor's Dull Coat before starting my highlights. Players wishing to field armies quickly could stop here but I want them to 'pop' on the tabletop so I will add 2-3 highlights for each color.
We are moving closer to the release of Land of the Free and we have had a lot of exciting activity in the industry over the past few months. Wargames Factory announced their supporting range of 6 plastic box sets consisting of Continental Infantry, Colonial Militia, British Infantry, Native Americans (Indians), and 2 to be named later. I recently ended a Kickstarter, my very first one, which offered up a myriad of customized dice concentrating on the Colonial Period. If you missed your chance to pick up your dice, don't worry, because Wargames Factory will be selling dice sets along with their range of plastic miniatures later this year.

I have been working with Alex, owner of Ironheart Artisans, and we have been collaborating on a set of tokens that will not only work for Land of the Free but many of the tokens could be used for other game systems. The contents of each token set are designed for one player participating in an average sized game. Alex sent me a sample of the finished product and I took some pictures to share with you.

The first pack of tokens are the wound markers or 'hit' markers. Alex even spent time researching the print font that was used in the 1770s to create these wonderful, ingenious markers. They are designed with the 90 degree cut so you can place the marker on the back edge of element unlucky enough to suffer hits. These are great because it avoids confusion during a game trying to figure out which hits belong to which element. The size of the marker works very well for both 25mm and 15mm.
The Morale Token Set has six different tokens for the different discipline affects an element might suffer during a game of Land of the Free. Elements failing an order, being pushed to hard by their commanding officer, or being hit by cannon fire are just a few ways an element will suffer a Disorder Marker. Disorder is cumulative so smart players will make sure to remove any Disorders before attempting the more difficult tasks in the game.

Shaken and Exhausted are Discipline levels that an element will eventually reach as it takes hits in the game. The marker has a reminder on them telling the players what type of actions it loses as its morale is decreased.
The Game Accessories Marker Set has both setup and in game functionality. The set comes with deployment zone markers as well as a center of the table marker which could also serve as a wind direction marker or general compass. There are 3 objective markers that are very useful for the Land of Free scenarios and could be used for historical re-fights. The 45 degree template is great because if you lay it against the front corner of your element it will give you a perfect 45 degrees every time. The set comes with the 9 markers seen below and retails for $12.
The token set that caters to the Land of the Free rules the most is aptly named Land of the Free Token Set. In the pack you will find the markers for your commanders as well as markers for your elements when they perform particular orders such as firing, holding for a snap fire, or preparing for a counter-charge. The oval shaped markers with the Fleur-dy-Lys are command tokens that can be issued to commanders at the beginning of each turn.

There are four different levels of commanders in the game and these could be randomly determined at the start of the game or themed to represent historical leaders more accurately.

Elements may elect to use their orders to set themselves in a snap fire or counter charge posture. The markers make it easy to remember which element is doing what. The fire marker is used when an element has shot and is unable or unwilling to reload their weapons.
Hello everyone. During my playtesting of Land of the Free, a set of wargaming rules being published by Osprey, I had some themed dice created in order to enhance our gaming experience. Throughout the process I felt that other people out there may want some of these dice for their own fun. So, I created a Kickstarter offering 3 different dice for the major powers that were involved in fighting in North America during the late 18th and early 19th century. The link is provided below and I hope you back the project. Thanks,
Hello everyone. I have received several questions and I wanted to answer them in the hopes of
giving you guys an idea about the rules of the game. I know this will
generate more questions and I will do my best to answer what I can but
the book is currently being reviewed and edited so I don't want to
disappoint someone if something doesn't make the book. Anyways here is
some information about the game.

Standard size or number of miniatures in a game?
Land
of Free uses a flexible force building system utilizing 4 different
sizes to represent your elements (units) in the game (tiny, small,
medium, large). These sizes can represent anything that the players
elect to play allowing gaming groups to play at smaller 'skirmish' level
actions or bigger battles.

Troop ratio?
There is no set ratio because the players determine the size of their games.

Basing standard?
There
are recommended basing styles in the book but again the basing is
flexible to accommodate the myriad of existing collections in the world.

How does army building work?
Players
must have a Force Commander and a minimum of two Group commanders. Each
Group Commander must have a minimum of two elements (any size). So a
legal army would be a Force Commander, Group Commander with 2 Elements,
and another Group Commander with 2 Elements

Ground scale?
All movement and force setup in the game is standardized regardless of the scale of the miniatures.

Time scale? Battle and reality
The
ordering system takes into account that an element is performing their
actions over a couple minutes of combat time. In reality a game that
consists of about 6-8 elements per side will take about 2 hours once the
players know the rules.

Phases of the game?
The turn
operates by Groups. One player will activate a group then activate each
element within the group until all elements have had an opportunity to
receive orders. Then the other player will do the same. The sides will
continue to alternate activating groups until all groups and elements
have performed their orders or passed. So an active element will perform
all their moving, shooting, melee, etc. before moving to the next
element.

How do orders work?
Each element has a number of
maneuver and combat orders it may perform in a turn. These orders can be
done in any sequence giving an element a measure of tactical
flexibility. Maneuver actions are things like moving forward, backward,
turning, wheeling, changing formation, and reloading their weapons.
Combat orders are shooting and fighting a round of melee.

Unit stats?
A unit has the following stats: Maneuver, Combat, Discipline, Morale, Action, Points
The stats are based on the elements size but also can be influenced in the Advanced Rules by the elements type.
For example a medium element would look something like this:
Maneuver: 3, Combat: 3, Discipline: 3, Morale: 7+, Action: 4, Points: 25
Maneuver
and combat are the number of orders an element may take in a single
turn. See above. Discipline is the number of hits an element may take
before it loses a level of discipline. Morale is the value or higher an
element must roll on 2d6 in order to pass morale related tests. Action
is the number of d6 dice the element roles for both shooting and melee
combat. The points value is used for players wishing to play balanced
games.

Historical aspect (theaters, scenarios, etc)
A lot of
historical re-fights were written for the book but until the book has
been edited I think it would be best to hold off on listing the battles.
I tried to incorporate battles from all the wars that are represented
by these rules. There is also a section on 'generic' scenarios that are
typical of why these armies would fight.

Investment?
If you
are someone very interested in this time period and don't have any
miniatures then your initial cost of investment could be quite low. For
under $200.00 USD
you could have your rules and both American and British forces to create
some nice games. This value does not take into account a gaming table
and scenery. The rulebook retails for around $35 USD leaving you $165 USD for miniatures. Wargames Factory is releasing 6 boxes of toy soldiers and even if they sell them at $30 USD a piece that will give you 5 boxes to choose from. More than enough to get you started and playing some decent sized games.

Special rules for different unit types?
The
initial stats for the troops are generic allowing new players to
quickly grasp the concept of play and issuing orders without the added
confusion of special rules. In the Advanced Rules section I have added
several element types that players can use in their games for an added
points cost.

Well, on Friday last week Wargames Factory announced their second box which is Continental Infantry. The big and most important two boxes are now out of the way and we are all anticipating what the final four boxes will be. Some very astute gamers pointed out that they can see and speculate on two more boxes which are just barely visible on the box cover below. The words 'Colonial Militia' are legible with several people thinking that the other box says 'Woodland Indians'. Well, only time will tell as I can't divulge any information. Needless to say I think the six boxes selected will make everyone very happy and hopefully the product line is successful enough to see more boxes in the future.

Here is a look at what has been posted on several sites including Wargames Factory.

I think the box cover is really cool since it looks like a cartridge box. The new artwork and box design is the best look Wargames Factory has done to date. Really ups the look and I believe the quality of miniatures will make this range a huge success.

With the announcement of Wargames Factory's British infantry box set I thought it would be a great opportunity to provide some details on the Royal Clothing Warrant of 1768. There are some really great guidelines that you can use when painting your regiments but keep in mind that many officers altered the look of their regiment based on the needs and available resources at the time. So, these are the governing principles which His Majesty's soldiers must adhere to but when you are thousands of miles from home what the King doesn't know won't hurt him. :)
Here is a reference picture with some of the terms that are used for the soldiers equipment and clothing.
Well, it is official and I no longer need to bite my lip any longer. For the past year Wargames Factory has been very quietly designing 6 brand new plastic sets for the American Revolutionary War and on Friday, April 4th they posted a very clever teaser showing the artwork for the box set. The picture was in the guise of a puzzle but once assembled you can see the artwork and contents of the box set. 30 miniatures will be contained in the British box but no news has been announced regarding the poses or the make-up of the soldiers. Over the coming weeks I am sure Wargames Factory will make more announcements and I am very excited about starting my brand new all plastic AWI forces.
I have had a passion for history since my days in high school and I only learned about miniature wargaming through an incredibly weird happenstance in college. I managed a video games store that traded and sold used games and systems when a customer walked in hoping to sell some toy soldiers. I thought they were interesting and offered to buy them for myself thinking I could assemble them much like when I was a child putting together model airplanes and cars. After work I took them to the local hobby shop and asked them to educate me on what I just bought and 60 minutes and $100.00 later I walked out of the store with the games starter set. That was over twenty years ago and I haven't looked back since.

During my past twenty years I ended up working for the very same company that hooked me into miniature wargames and learned an awful lot about the industry and business. I spent most of my career organizing the very events that I attended during my journey along this great hobby and although my initial experiences were in the fantasy and science fiction market I found myself always gravitating back to real history. My heart and passion lead me on a new path of discovery as I was introduced to historical reenacting or living history. There is no greater feeling than educating our youth about history and how it impacts our lives today. During this time I found a new opportunity working with another gaming company but this time they sold primarily historical wargames.

2nd Pennsylvania Regiment at the Valley Forge encampment

My hunger and desire to learn more and participate more in the hobby only grew as I worked with a company that allowed me to talk about history on a daily basis. The next logical step for me was to become more involved in the creative aspect of the hobby. I had to be realistic with myself that I can't draw, sculpt, or paint in 2D but I have had some experience with writing and painting toy soldiers. So, here we are in 2014 and I have decided to create a blog showcasing my journey along a new path as I collect, assemble, paint, and hopefully game with my new collections of 18th and 19th century North American armies.

I may jump around between projects and there may be inconsistency in the posting times but in the end I hope to present a great resource for existing gamers, new hobbyists, and fans of history. I plan to provide assembly and painting guides, army building tips, historical references, battle reports, and maybe even some good old fashioned historical articles.

I hope you enjoy this blog as much as I will enjoy producing it.
